Prerequisite:
None
Co-requisite:
None
Aims of Course:
This course introduces the student to a very important branch of mathematics. The concepts of differential equations and their applications are vital to any engineering system. The methods and techniques of solving differential equations are of fundamental importance in all fields of science and engineering
Learning Experiences:
The course is offered in 40 hours lecture with case studies, individual exercises, project works, class discussion, critical analysis, problem solving, and individual private study.
Course Learning Outcomes:
Â
- Introduce the basic concepts of ordinary differential equations. Methods of solutions and their applications are also addressed.
- We start with some classification of differential equations. We then introduce first order ODE and their types: separable, exact, linear, Bernoulli, and possibly some more.
- We turn to higher order linear ODE. We discuss the homogeneous and non-homogeneous cases.
- We look at the method of undetermined coefficients, the method of variation of parameters, and the Euler-Cauchy equation. We end up with power series solutions, the method of Frobenius, and Bessel’s equation and functions.
