AIM OF THE COURSE

Illustration takes the act of drawing to another level--Visual Communication. Being able to get across an idea, concept or emotion through an illustration is the illustrator’s hardest problem.

The students approach major elements of technique, application, and theory in relation to becoming illustrators. Studio sessions involve basic anatomy, design and typography for illustrator, figurative expression, photographic tools, and illustrative technique. Class structure allows demonstrations of process and experimentation and critique with illustrative media

Students will be instructing in the conceptualization and production of illustrated characters. Assignments will challenge students to create characters for a variety of purposes and media. Conceptual strategies will be stressed as they relate to character appearance and function. Assignments will involve, production methodologies, character diagramming and color systems. LEARNING OUTCOMES

As a result of successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

• Give faces to characters in a story
• Display a number of examples of an item described in an academic textbook
• Visualise step-wise sets of instructions in a technical manual
• Communicating subtle thematic tone in a narrative
• Evoke the viewer to feel emotion in such a way as to expand on the linguistic aspects of the narrative

• Class lectures over the pertinent information and principles
• Reviewing and discussing professional examples of illustration
• Reading assignments provide students with information that goes deeper that classroom discussions
• Lab projects and exercises exemplifying the type of graphics work being discussed
