AIM OF THE COURSE

Print Production examines the methods of commercial printing; the presses, inks, paper, and finishing. The prepress operations to prepare digital files for printing will be emphasized.

The course identifies the major elements and components of the printing industry. It describes in brief the steps required by the graphic designer to understand the major printing processes, Packaging elements and procedures, in addition to printing materials and products.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

As a result of successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Develop awareness of developing printing technologies, and the development of a learning strategy or habit.
  • Gain an understanding of lithography, letterpress, gravure, screen-printing, digital printing, and large format printing.
  • Edit, color correct, and enhance photographic images for printing.
  • Develop efficient workflows for image editing.
  • Coordinate files from editing and layout applications into press-ready documents.
  • Use software to collect files for output.
  • Configure the Adobe PDF creation tools for proofing and final output.

 

LEARNING EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Lectures sessions, discussions, and project development including research strategies.
  • Teamwork is emphasized through small group activities in the classroom.
  • Field trips – to be determined by professor-of-record.
